South Hill Mural
by Clark Mariotti
The Mural is under way and I am happy to be making progress.
With the busy season of my house painting business in full swing, I am progressing slowly; however, it is giving the mural a chance to evolve, with the new ideas that are being incorporating into the wall.
I have brainstormed with numerous muralist / artists to Q&A ideas on techniques and methods.
Studying each step from gridding the image (which is a method of transferring an image to a large surface), to layering sky, then the clouds, and most recently outlining the basic art in charcoal. The next step will be to cut in the mountains, after that the trees, and then the houses. From that point, I am planning to bring in some animals of the Southern Hills; Coyotes, Rabbits, Ravens, Raccoons…
To this point, I have been the only one doing the painting.
Our original discussion of this mural with the SHHA Board was more than a year ago, so I felt it was time to start making progress. With the school year starting soon, I will reach out again to the art school teacher about getting the kids of the school / neighborhood involved in some way.
Numerous passersby have stopped by to thank me and say they are excited to see the progress. I am happy to be making something beautiful that can be shared with all who pass.
The Southern Hill Community is full of good people, and I am hoping this with help increase the feeling of community and encourage others to engage with one another in a friendly / neighborly way.
I am not exclusively trying to complete this mural on my own and invite people who would like to participate to let me know, clarkspaintingsf@gmail.com.

Mural for the Wall at South Hill and Canyon
The problem with graffiti on the South Hill Wall helped develop the mural idea as a solution to hopefully deter vandalism.
As a painter in the know of solutions people use to deter graffiti, a mural is the most fun option. I am all about community and love art and painting. So, what better way to address the wall you see every day, than to place a mural that reminds you of where you are (how beautiful the San Bruno Mountains are), but also sends a message of the developing community here in a positive way.
The vision to paint a mural on the wall is multifaceted:
- To stop graffiti.
- To have something nice to look at.
- To involve the kids / community from Panorama School and the neighborhood (which was not my idea, but I think it’s great!). This will help foster the idea of the community here, and putting that into action (into the mural) is the best way to get the best outcome.
I have been contacted by the art school teacher of Panorama Elementary School and plan to collaborate with her on the best way to incorporate the kids of the school. I will still head the project, and if any new ideas / changes / additions to the overall idea of a Southern Hills landscape mural come up after discussions with the art teacher, I will present them to the board.
Work has been tremendously busy, and I have not been able to start the painting of the mural, but I am preparing to make more progress, and pick it up by reaching out to the school teacher. I have a loose goal of a March/ April completion.
